We are an international African American heritage tourism destination. Explore our vibrant businesses, theatres, and thriving communities.
The National Heritage Area stretches from Chicago's South Loop to Woodlawn (18th St. to the north, 71st St. to the south,
Lake Michigan to the east, Bronzeville-Black Metropolis National Heritage Area, and Canal St. to the west.
Our seven eighborhoods include: Douglas, Grand Boulevard, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland,
Washington Park, Woodlawn, and portions of the Near South Side.
As a destination marketing organization (DMO), the mission of the Black Metropolis Convention & Tourism Council is to facilitate the development of African American heritage tourism districts throughout the State of Illinois. We aim to preserve the unique character of the neighborhoods in which they reside, improve the socio-economic & physical conditions of these communities, build resident pride, and enhance race relations.
We focus on three core areas to accomplish this mission:

Our area historical sites include: Bronzeville Trail, the Emmett Till and Mamie Mobley-Till National Monument, the Monument to the Great Migration, Ida B. Wells Monument, Roberts Temple Church, Muddy Waters Museum, Quinn Chapel, and a Camp Douglas Civil War Pop-Up Exhibit.
Explore our shopping areas, museums, 14 hotels, nature & park spaces, and family fun activities. Immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes and breathtaking skyline views. Be sure to check out the Chicago Architecture Center's Open House sites too. Take a walking tour when you're here and our heritage bus tours will be available to book soon. Pick up your National Park Service passport from us or get Group Travel information. Chicago was also named the "Best Big City" for the 9th year in a row!
Indulge in the decadence of our restaurants where our food scene is constantly celebrated. Whatever meal you want, you can find it here. We are known for world-class dining and unmatched hospitality. From traditional dishes to 3-star Michelin creations, the culinary choices are sure to tantalize your taste buds. Here are a few to take a look at: Norman's Bistro, Bronzeville Winery, Peaches, Shawn Michelle’s, Pearl's Place, Batter and Berries, Virtue, Ja'Grill, Valois, Daisy's PoBoy, and Cleo's Southern Cuisine. Our gastronomy knows no bounds. It's a foodie's heaven.
Soak in the sun at Margaret T. Burroughs beach at 31st St., Oakwood at 41st St., 57th St. beach or 63rd St. beach. You can also book boat, kayak, paddleboard or jet ski rentals at 31st Street beach.
